XCOM 2 is a lot more action packed then what I remember from XCOM: Enemy Unknown. We were promised much more continuous and flowing combat sequences, and so far it seems that they've delivered that. What really shines through is the quick paced combat and easy movements from cover to cover. The UI and general animations are all very similar to what we know from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, great amounts of detail on the characters, exceptional weapons effects and a general fluidity to the movements of your teammates. A monument has been erected in the center of the city, and destroying it will be a great symbolic victory for the cause. It's Unification Day on Earth, the day marking the conquering of Earth by the Alien races, the Elders, and the institution of a global government.

The demo for XCOM 2 starts with an in-game cinematic explaining the special day that's about to unfold. The three swept in from a helicopter and started sprinting towards our poor agents, as Mission Command yelled about how we “couldn’t take them on.2 of 9 XCOM 2 offers new classes, new enemies, new weapons and a very interesting story. Again, we’re talking outnumbered, outgunned, and about to be overrun.

After blowing up the Unification statue we came under attack from two more humanoid robots and a massive muscle-monster gorilla-alien which appeared to have no skin.

Right down to the “GET TO DA CHOPPAH” ending. I sort of enjoyed this aspect, as it gave previously unremarkable actions a more cinematic feel- XCOM might at its heart be a dry tactics game, but XCOM 2 looks like an action movie. One side note about the statue exploding: Firaxis seems to have put a larger emphasis on conveying story in XCOM 2, dropping in a number of short cutscene-esque asides during our demo. High-risk, high-reward.įrom there, the demo pretty much played out as expected-people moved forward, aliens pushed back, both sides got some lucky shots in, the statue exploded, and it was time for evac. Closing in, she swept at the snake-alien with a knife and killed it in one hit. One of our agents leapt out of cover, sprinting towards the snake-alien in what was either the bravest or stupidest move of the day. Another new addition: Ultra-powerful melee attacks.
